Archive for August, 2011

We talked about:

  • Benefits – proposing that our October meeting (October 18th ) should be about “benefits and recovery”. Involvement scheme – 5 Boroughs
  • Rainhill hospital history – Tony described the book they produced as part of some work at Winwick hospital and asked if we could produce something similar. Stan talked about a march against the closure of Rainhill hospital.
  • Art Exhibition – an exhibition in Mash Gallery for World Mental Health Day. We thought about various titles – including “Asylum: A place of safety” Kim, Tony, Dave agreed to coordinate the exhibition.
  • Community Navigators – people to go to for information and signposting about groups and other services. They would not give advice or support. Several people were keen to develop this idea. They are having a meeting about the navigators in 2 weeks. They will all bring the information together to compile a list.
  • Psychiatrists on general wards – One person described having to wait on a hospital ward (general) to see apsychiatrist. We have been told several times that there is a psychiatrist available to the whole hospital. People should not have long waits within the hospital. People who are using or need mental health services should have access to support if they are admitted to the general hospital. This is a stressful time for anyone, and can be very distressing for people with existing problems.
  • Walks – Together have organized a sponsored walk for 19th September.
  • Trips – Contact Denise for up to date information on the trips:
    • August: Trip to New Brighton using travel passes.
    • September: Blackpool Lights coach trip
    • November: another coach trip to the Lights
  • Social Evenings
    • 30th September – £3 tickets or pay on the door. Dave Walkden is organizing a fund raising evening in aid of an 8 year old who has been diagnosed with cancer. Titus Insignia will be playing. There will be karaoke and a raffle. All welcome. 7.30pm to 12 at Thatto Heath Labour Club on Elephant Lane.
    • 28th October – £5 tickets Denise is organizing an event to include disco, karaoke and a hot pot supper, at St Anne’s club in Sutton. This will be a fund raiser for the Oasis group – everyone welcome. Please support the group.
  • Time to change / state of mind State of mind was set up after the death of Terry Newton. It aims to raiseawareness of mental health for everyone involved in rugby from professionals to amateurs and including players, supporters and coaches. It’s supported by the RFL. Locally there are events being held across St Helens on Saturday mornings to 1st October between 10am and 1pm. Everyone is welcome to attend the events
  • Peer Support Network – The group has made a start at tidying up the Memorial Garden area of the Church. We’ve been a bit held up by the weather, but we’re battling the weeds and the area is looking much better. Thank you to everyone who’s been involved

Another wonderful day out with fantastic weather. Congratulations to Denise for organizing another sell out coach trip. So many people wanted to go along this time that we needed two coaches. Denise organized it all with her usual efficiency and hard work – including wheelchairs, toilet breaks, support workers and much more. A huge thank you to her – and to the workers from together who came along to provide support as needed to make sure that everyone could have a great day out.

We are looking at the feedback forms – which were full of praise for Denise and appreciation of the groups. We will feed back more details soon, but just to let you know that the information you provide on these forms does make a difference. It helps us to plan activities that you want. For example, a few of you have suggested a coach trip to Blackpool Lights – watch this space for an announcement soon!
